Hello, friends! Happy New Almanac Year! Today, August 29, is the official “Debut Day” of The 2024 Old Farmer’s Almanac! This means the 2023-2024 Winter Weather Map and Forecast is out! With our official release, let’s get to the question that most of our readers want answered first: What is the winter forecast this year? Without further ado, here’s the Almanac’s long-lead seasonal outlook! You can also find our colorful winter weather map at Almanac.com/winter. Get Ready for a Winter Wonderland! It’s not every year that we get to predict a classic Christmas. If you’re a snow bunny or sweater lover, you’re going to be as excited as we are! Much of the United States will experience a blanket of snow, seasonable cold, and all of winter’s delights. |
Will There Be Snow? Yes! Most areas of the United States that typically see snow should be prepared for oodles of fluffy white throughout the season. Just right for an afternoon of adventurous snow sports. Imagine a winter postcard—not extreme amounts of snow, but with snow totals above normal in most snow-prone areas, except for the Pacific Northwest. Whether you envision a cozy cabin in the snow, hitting the slopes, or a traditional white Christmas, we’ve got you covered! Keep a shovel at the ready early, especially in the Northeast and Midwest, where snow will arrive beginning in November, with storms, showers, and flurries continuing through the start of spring. In addition, let’s talk precipitation: Refreshing relief is coming to the coastal states of California, the Deep South, and Texas, with mild to cool temperatures and potentially drought-quenching rain. Sweater weather is the theme for the coastline of the Pacific Northwest, which will be relatively dry and cold throughout the season. |
How Cold Will Winter Be? We’ll be shifting from a warmer-than-normal fall to a winter that will be near normal or colder for most of the country. This tendency towards cooler temperatures arises from El Niño impacts. While there are always extra-chilly periods and winter’s always cold, we don’t expect a really harsh winter compared to past years. Most weeks should offer just the right amount of chill in the air for enjoying a big ol’ mug of hot cocoa by a crackling fire. In a handful of areas, weather will be warmer than normal: These include locales from New England and the Atlantic Corridor down to Florida, the Gulf Coast, and southern Texas, as well as Alaska. All of these regions are bordered by the ocean.
