| Keep the Color Coming The end of summer doesn't mean the end of a beautifully vivid garden! Join The Old Farmer's Almanac Gardening Club to keep your garden blooming. | | | Dear Fall Gardener, As summer comes to an end, experienced gardeners know that another season of abundance is here. Fragrant perennials are coming to life in the garden, and in the kitchen, we’re drying, pickling, and otherwise preserving any of that summer bounty that we want to save for the cold days of mid-winter. In fact, we have three favorite fall flowers that are just getting started. The Lycoris squamigera is more commonly known as the magic lily because its straplike foliage appears in spring, dies back in late summer, then “magically” rises 18 to 24 inches with a burst of 4 to 7 trumpets of rose-pink blooms. Another we love is the Boltonia asteroides. Plant these and you’ll get a billowing profusion of daisy-like flowers with golden centers. Just as other flowers are dying back in August, this North American native plant begins to flower, continuing well into September. The next fall flower, the Ville de Lyon, comes to us from 19th-century France and gives gardeners a stunning late summer act. The carmine-red flowers are 4 to 5 inches across, with contrasting yellow stamens. You can get more details about these three fall flowers, including how to grow them, in the September 2019 issue of EXTRA! In fact, there are dozens of issues of EXTRA! going back to November 2015. If you want to add some trees to the mix, fall is an excellent time for planting them, too! A tree’s roots begin growing the moment they touch the earth and will continue to grow until the soil temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. By planting now, your tree is rooted and ready to grow when spring rolls around. Take a look at the September 2018 issue of EXTRA! to get the full 10-step guide to successfully selecting and planting your next tree. Plus, you can find out which trees are best planted in spring rather than fall. And that’s just a sample of the many informative seasonal articles and facts that you get every month as part of your membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club. That means you have hundreds upon hundreds of award-winning recipes, enlightening gardening articles and tips, fascinating tidbits of folklore, humorous stories and quips, and tips for living naturally. It’s all at your fingertips with your membership in the The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club. | | Save Your Harvest Safely | As much as we love our summer and fall harvest, we can’t take it into winter with us… unless we freeze, dry, pickle, ferment, or can the abundance. Be aware, however, that there are a few rules for food safety when you preserve your fresh veggies. What’s important here is to keep up with the latest research and recommendations from the National Center for Home Food Preservation, based at the University of Georgia. And in case you’re wondering, the recommendations do change somewhat regularly. For example, most people considered tomatoes acidic enough to process safely in a boiling-water bath. But that changed a few years ago when researchers found that, to be safe, many varieties need to either be processed in a pressure canner or have lemon juice, citric acid, or vinegar added. Want to learn more? Check out the September 2017 issue of EXTRA! as part of the all-inclusive package you get with your Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club membership! | | Tiptoe Through The Tulips | One of the earliest signs of spring goes in the ground now! Depending on the variety, tulips may be star-shaped or bowl-shaped and stand anywhere from 4 to 14 inches high. They come in seemingly endless shades of reds, whites, yellows, maroons, pinks, oranges, purples, and multi-colored. Of course, color may not be your only consideration. Some species of tulips don’t bloom until late-spring. Others are better in planting zones 3 to 6, while the Lady, Candia, and Florentine tulips are great for zones 8 to 10. Whichever you choose, tulips need a nice sunny spot to thrive, although they will tolerate some shade. The November 2018 edition of EXTRA! has the full story. | | | | | 2022 Now Shipping! This compact calendar is the perfect size to fit on the wall in your kitchen, den, or potting shed. Each month features rich, full-color illustrations along with tips, history, or background information on the artwork. Here are just a few of the types of tips you can find in our 2022 Gardening Calendar: - If you like your asparagus more on the sweet side, cover the growing green spears with black plastic or bury them in soil or hay. The covering keeps chlorophyll from developing, giving you a harvest of sweet, white spears.
- You can’t eat its fruit, but you can grow one species of banana tree for its lush foliage as far north as Zone 4. It can grow as high as 18 feet tall!
- For a pet-safe garden, try planting pansies. They’re safe for dogs, and delicious in salads!
- Ants can be your partner in pest control. They love the nectar on peonies, and will drive away other insects while they’re foraging for food. Be sure to rinse blossoms before you bring them inside for a bouquet.
- For seedling success, transplant your young plants on overcast days or in the evening.
- Parsnips love a cold snap. Harvest your parsnips after a hard frost. That helps the plant convert its starches to sugars, making your parsnips sweeter.
- If your compost pile smells like ammonia, try adding shredded leaves or straw.
You’ll love the advice, folklore, and gardening secrets in our 2022 Gardening Wall Calendar! As you count the days until your next planting or your next harvest, peruse the pages of Gardening for Everyone for tips on how to grow better, naturally! From the practical to the ornamental, plan your prolific garden and learn how to: - Plant edibles indoors and out, no matter how small your space is.
- Create a serene and leafy oasis—and why you should.
- Make a living herb wreath—a kitchen garden in the round.
- Grow blooms that beautify your surroundings and make breathtaking bouquets.
