| Dear Precise Planner, Benjamin Franklin is oft credited with saying that little in life is certain except for death and taxes. And while there are few certainties in life, we believe that some days are certainly better than others for engaging in certain activities. The Old Farmer’s Almanac may be best known for weather predictions, but it has a long history of sharing the best days for planning, projects, and planting. For instance, if you want to know when to plant corn, just look at the white oak tree. According to one Native American tradition, “when the leaf of the white oak, which puts forth in the spring, is of the size of the ear of a mouse, it is time to plant corn.” That was from the 1919 edition, but we’ve managed a few updates in the past 103 years and have uncovered the best dates for more than two dozen activities. Planning to wash your windows? There are 32 days this year that are optimal for doing so. Want to make sauerkraut? You have 29 days to choose from. | The Best Days for Each Month The 2022 Almanac includes a table showing the best days for certain activities, based on the Moon’s sign. So whether you’re buying a home, want to quit smoking, pickling your favorite vegetables, or cutting hay, you’ll want to take a look. Just as an example, if you plan to purchase animals, your best days this year are: - January 15-17
- February 12, 13
- March 11-13
- April 7-9
- May 5, 6
- June 1-3, 28-30
- July 25-27
- August 22, 23
- September 18-20
- October 15-17
- November 12, 13
- December 19-11
What else is on the list? You can discover the best days for starting and ending projects, camping, breeding animals, getting married, getting dental care, painting, laying shingles, pruning to encourage or discourage growth, setting posts, making jams and jellies, baking, brewing, and so much more. (And, yes, we know that there’s not really a “bad” day for camping; these are just the best days for it.) Oh! Here’s a good one. Want to know what the best days are for traveling? In January, it’s the 18th and 19th. Beyond that? You’ll have to take a look at The Old Farmer’s Almanac. | | Best Fishing Days and Times What can we say? Fishing gets its very own page! We can’t give everything away, but here are some highlights. The Sun, Moon, tides, and weather all influence fish activity. For example, fish tend to feed more at sunrise and sunset, and also during a full Moon (when tides are higher than average). However, most of us go fishing simply when we can get the time off. But according to fishing lore, during the “morning rise” (after sunup for a spell) and the “evening rise” (just before sundown and the hour or so after) are prime times for fishing. One hour before and one hour after high tide is another good time for fishing, as is one hour before and one hour after low tide. As for the best days each month, try to go when the Moon is between new and full. There’s a full list of days in this year’s Almanac, but I also wanted to share with you another interesting bit of information about estimating the weight of a fish—even a fish that is “this big!” Measure the length of the fish from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail. Then measure its girth at the thickest portion of its midsection. For fat-bodied fish like bass or salmon, the equation is length x girth x girth divided by 800. For slender fish like trout, the equation is length x girth x girth divided by 900. So a 20-inch trout with a 12-inch girth would be (20 x 12 x 12) divided by 900 = 3.2 pounds. | | | | Get Your Special Pass—Access to the World's Most Beloved Almanac! | | | | Any Day Is a Good Day Some days are better than others.
