Dear Reader, Since Robert Bailey Thomas published the inaugural edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac on September 15, 1792, the Moon has played a prominent role in our pages. Look back through the years and you’ll find farming traditions that coincide with Lunar phases. You hear it in our words when we talk about the Harvest Moon, the Blue Moon, or the Strawberry Moon. We can feel the Moon’s presence as the ocean tides move in and out. Some people have even been there to stand on its surface! And now we want to take you to the Moon. Although we can’t get you physically there, when you join the 1792 Society, you can get about as close as possible without leaving the comforts of Earth. The 2022 Moon Calendar may be the most gorgeous one we’ve ever published. The cover photo alone is simply magical. You get more than just pretty pictures, though. Each month you’ll find a curated selection of Lunar events, facts, folktales, and stories. Or explore the Moon in-depth in the Almanac! Wondering when to expect a Total Lunar Eclipse this year? Or where on earth you can best view the eclipse? It’s all here in A Calendar Of The Heavens. In fact, a full year of astronomical sights and events are included here. When can you watch the Moon rise on August 23? How can you use the Moon to find Mars or Saturn in February? And what does the new Moon have in store for Antarctica at the end of April? Join The Old Farmer's Almanac 1792 Society today and find out! | It's the Best of Days | Did you know that the Moon can influence the success of your gardening endeavors? For ages, humans have looked to the Moon to determine when to plant, transplant, harvest, build garden beds, play and weed, or prune to encourage or discourage new growth. The Moon has influence in other areas of our lives, too. Whether you want to quit smoking, bake something, travel for pleasure, buy a home, or go to the dentist, some days are better than others, based on the Moon’s sign. By the way, this includes fishing and camping. And while we’d be happy to sit around the campfire pretty much anytime, there are some days that hold a bit more promise. Wondering what they are? It’s all in The 2022 Old Farmer’s Almanac. | | Photo Credit: Maestrovideo/Getty Images | What's in a Lunar Name? | While the Moon has an effect on our tides and planting schedules, we humans have brought the Moon into our stories, too. Take the full Moon in February; did you know it’s also called the Snow Moon because February is traditionally a time of heavy snow? August has the Sturgeon Moon because this is a good time for catching the sturgeon, which is native to the Great Lakes. October’s full Moon is the Hunter’s Moon, because this is the time to hunt in preparation for winter. The October full Moon is also called the Full Falling Leaves Moon or the Full Migrating Moon. You can probably guess why! And while you might be able to easily guess which months some of these names go with – Greeting Moon or the Flower Moon, for instance – some are more challenging to place. The Worm Moon is a little tricky. The Hot Moon isn’t when you might expect it to be. You may be able to figure out when the Wind Strong Moon is, but good luck with the Sore Eye Moon or the Buck Moon. Don’t worry. We won’t leave you guessing. All of these are in the latest edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
