Carol's weeding tips, advice, and more!
| Greetings, Gardeners, "When the weather is good for crops, it is also good for weeds." –Theodore Roosevelt, American president (1858–1919), from "Address at Providence" in 1901 The hot July sunshine makes a garden grow—and, along with it, weeds! Weeding a garden is much like editing stories for The Old Farmer's Almanac. Both entail removing things that needn't be there; weeds and unnecessary words crop up no matter how hard you've worked to eradicate them! Just as weeds deprive plants of food and energy, superfluous sentiments can steal the focus of a story. | | | | If you eliminate weeds in the first 4 weeks of their life cycles, you'll prevent them from removing vital nutrients, a win for the soil. Weeding is also good for the soul—there's a Zen-like rhythm to it, and afterward, a deep satisfaction when your cucumbers and broccoli no longer have to compete with crabgrass and purslane for soil, sunshine, and water. In the garden, as in editorial work, there's always the question: Is it a weed, or is it something worthwhile? Very often, that's a matter of opinion. In my permaculture orchard, many of the "weeds" are good for the ecosystem in some way, just as words seemingly extra to one editor might be pearls of wisdom to another. | | | | Even though I mulch my vegetable plants with a thick layer of straw, by the time July rolls around, the weeds are threatening to take over. Like many of you, I'll spend time this month hoeing, pulling, covering, and smothering. Whether you're on bended knee wearing trusty knee pads or wielding a handy hoe, weeding provides moments to just be out in your garden. Here's to beating back at least most of the weeds, giving you and your plants room to grow. | | | | Want to learn more about how to maintain your garden this summer?
