Next-Level Gardening Trends in home gardening are fascinating, but out on the farm, things are really changing, beginning with the fact that “out on the farm” can also mean “up on the farm.” That’s right. Massive rooftop food gardens and farms are showing up around the world, from Thailand to France to Canada.” Developers are even converting vacant commercial buildings into indoor farms, while in Detroit, Michigan, there are at least 1,400 urban farms. What else is happening in the world of farming? Farmers are setting up social media accounts for farm animals More farmers are expanding their crop rotations with small- grain crops to buffer against ongoing low commodity crop prices and increasingly volatile weather. More than 130,000 farms sell directly to consumers. Forward-looking farmers are “rewilding” farmland to reintroduce native plants and attract birds, mammals, and other animals. All this gardening and farming leads to the question of what are we doing with all this produce? Eating your greens With more than 8 million acres of land certified for organic field crop production, all that produce has to go somewhere. And if you live in a city, it might just go to an abandoned storefront. You read that right. One of the latest trends in city dwelling is renting out vacant shops to host dinner parties. What should you wear to one of these dinner parties? Eco-friendly attire is one smart trend that’s catching on. Shorts are being made from plastic bottles. Jackets are being fashioned from discarded fishing nets. Naturally colored cottons and plant “leather” is catching on, too. What else can you look forward to in 2021?
