The Weather in November

Is it time to pull out the heavy winter coats? You may want to get them ready since The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a cooler-than-normal November for much of the country.
 Dear Weather Watcher,

November wasn’t always the 11th month of the year. The name comes from the Latin novem, “nine,” because this was the ninth month of the early Roman calendar. Ancient history aside, November has 30 days and is still technically autumn, although it can feel like the unofficial beginning of winter for a lot of people. In fact, about two-thirds of the country can expect colder-than-normal temperatures for the month.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts that the Northeast, Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Southeast, Florida, Lower Lakes, Ohio Valley, Deep South, Heartland, and Texas–Oklahoma will all see temperatures 1 to 3 degrees F below normal. Florida is the standout here, with November temperatures averaging 65° (4 degrees below normal). Interestingly, however, every one of those regions can expect higher-than-normal temperatures in December.

You can expect normal November temperatures if you’re in Alaska or Hawaii, while the Upper Midwest, High Plains, Intermountain Region, Desert Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Pacific Southwest are looking at temperatures above average.

Most of the country can expect close-to-normal precipitation for the month, with one big exception: the eastern and western parts of Hawaii will have 2 inches less rainfall than normal. How do we know?

The Old Farmer’s Almanac—America’s oldest and most popular almanac—uses a unique, age-old formula that’s traditionally 80% accurate. Our weather forecasting methodology stems from a secret formula that was devised by our founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792.

Thomas believed that weather on Earth was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun. Notes about his formula are locked in a black box in our offices in Dublin, New Hampshire. Over the years, we have refined and enhanced this formula with state-of-the-art technology and modern scientific calculations. For example, our overall accuracy rate in forecasting the direction of temperature change from normal for the 2018–2019 winter was 88.9%.

The Full Moon in November
November’s full Moon was called the Beaver Moon by many Native American tribes and colonial settlers. The Native Americans used the monthly Moons and nature’s signs as a sort of calendar to track the seasons. Why this name? The Beaver Moon was so named because this was the time to set beaver traps, before the waters froze.

The Moon isn’t just for trapping, though. Based on the Moon’s sign and phase in November, the best days to harvest above ground crops are the 1st, 2nd, 29th, and 30th, and with the 20th and 21st best for those below ground. Additionally, it’s helpful to know that during a waxing Moon, pruning encourages growth; during a waning Moon, it discourages growth.

How about fishing? Or setting eggs? We’d love to tell you more, because the Moon can reveal the best days for both of those activities, but if you want more specifics, you’ll need to get an Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Club Charter Membership!
Did You Know?
November’s birthstone is the topaz. You can find topaz in igneous rocks and sometimes in hydrothermal veins, and although it is colorless, impurities can turn it almost any hue, with yellow to amber as the most traditional.

The topaz symbolizes honor and strength, and the ancient Greeks believed a topaz could turn the wearer invisible. It was also thought to have the power to reduce fevers, relieve asthma, and prevent premature death. In the Middle Ages, it was ground into a powder and mixed with wine to guarantee a good night’s sleep.

November has an alternative birthstone, as well. Citrine is a pale yellow to dark amber quartz, with the yellow tones coming from iron. Natural citrines are rare, however, so most of them on the market are actually heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz. Like topaz, citrine is thought by some to carry calming and healing properties and even to protect against snake venom.

Ready to find out more about birthstones, weather predictions, and much other useful information, wit, and wisdom? You can get it—along with a bundle of BONUSES!—with an Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Club Charter Membership!

How warm will it be? How cold? How much rain or snow should you expect this season? We’d love to tell you more, but if you want the specifics on snowfall, spring and summer temperatures, or where hurricanes are most likely to strike, you’ll need to join The Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Watcher’s Club!
