Happy new year, friends, patrons, and enthusiasts! Cheers for the years that you've invested in this Almanac—or the months, even days, if you are newly acquainted with us. As our founder, Robert B. Thomas, admonished centuries ago, we all do well to start each year "square"—that is, to let bygones be and begin anew. So we shall. Like many of you at this time, we reflect on the past and begin to contemplate the future that will unfold in the weeks and months to come. For all of us—and no doubt for many of you—2021 brought unwelcome challenges and unfulfilled expectations as well as gratifying moments, poignant memories, and sparks of joy. Through it all, it was the latter that gave meaning to our days and chosen occupation. Your loyalty and appreciation—evidenced by kind words in cards, letters, emails, and occasional phone calls, as well as comments online (such as on Almanac.com and elsewhere; these public acknowledgments exceed our highest aspirations)—have encouraged and inspired us to continue to perform and produce work that is deserving of your attention and support. As we begin this new year, we celebrate, salute, and—most importantly—thank you for your patronage, favor, and trust in our endeavors. You put us over the Moon! In the coming weeks, as we begin work on the 231st edition of the Almanac and its companion calendars and publications, your continued satisfaction will be foremost in our minds and hearts, for it is our goal to perpetuate our founder's mission: to make the Almanac "useful with a pleasant degree of humor." Thank you, friend! |
