Dear Garden Grower, As more and more people discover a love for gardening and growing their own food, it’s worth mentioning that you don’t need to feel left out if you don’t have a lot of space. There are some inventive ways to use your vertical space and garden up! Vining veggies are ideal for this. Peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, squash, and Malibar summer spinach all enjoy climbing. That’s right! As long as you have a good support system in place, vining vegetables aren’t just a nice alternative, they actually produce more per square foot than bush-type varieties of vegetables. It’s also easier to keep an eye out for pests, pick them when they’re ripe, and dare we say they look marvelous. You can even start early in the season with peas. Snap peas, snow peas, and shell peas are cool-season crops that will give you a six-foot-tall wall of green by early summer. Once you harvest the peas, you can use the same trellis for a crop of late-season cucumbers. How’s that for productivity! And while we’re on the subject of cucumbers, did you know that trellising will increase cucumber yield by 50 percent? Plus, you can grow varieties like the extra-long “Tasty Green” that you won’t usually find in stores. Let’s not forget everyone’s favorite garden plant, either. Some varieties of tomatoes are perfect for vertical gardening. It might take a little extra care on your part, but you won’t mind that one bit when you have a 6-foot trellis loaded with “Better Boy” or “Triple Crop” tomatoes! You can climb into the details of these trellis-loving plants in your 2021 edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide. Find out how to train your plants to grow up, how to make the most of a small space, and what kind of support your different vegetables need. It’s all yours with your membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club. And you don’t just get this year’s edition, you get access to all of them. That’s over 1,100 pages of gardening tips, plant lore, recipes, design ideas and inspiration, tricks, shortcuts, and so much more! | | | How To Go Vertical | Vines and trellises aren’t the only way to grow up. You can wake up a boring wall with a cacophony of color. Living walls are growing in popularity, and though you can find well-curated living walls in museums and galleries, they’re also on balconies, patios, porches and in small backyards everywhere. As a nice bonus, it’s an easy do-it-yourself project because there are a million ways to create your own wall of herbs, vegetables, and flowers. If you have a sunny wall (or fence) you have a potential candidate for a living wall. Beware, however, that plants, pots, and wet potting mix can get pretty heavy, so be sure your wall is secure and stable. If you aren’t sure, build your vertical garden from the ground up so that its weight is predominantly on the ground. Cascades of strawberries, stacks of salad greens, hanging herbs, walls of radishes, kale, basil, and bright yellow and orange marigolds don’t require a lot of room and they’re pretty much guaranteed to make you happy. The 2021 edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide has a complete DIY guide to make your own living wall with just a trellis panel and a few supplies along with several more ideas for growing a vertical garden. It’s so easy and so beautiful! Get the details and start planning your vertical garden with inspiration in the latest edition of the Garden Guide! | | Blooms That Boom With Color | While there is a lot to enjoy in the latest Garden Guide, we’d be remiss if we didn’t share with you the bounty of the Garden Guide library. Here are just a few of the types of tips you can find in our 2021 Gardening Calendar: - Reinvigorate your houseplants by removing the top 1/4 inch of soil and top-dressing with fresh potting soil.
- Use an old salt shaker for sowing tiny seeds. Mix the seeds with sand for better spreading.
- Plants with a strong citrus fragrance will help to keep pesky bugs at bay. Try planting lemon-scented geraniums, lemon thyme, or lemon balm.
- Lettuce shaded naturally or by shade cloth will encourage the growth of a tender, sweet crop all summer.
- To attract dragonflies, create a water feature. Choose a spot in partial to full sun and plant a few native plants along the edges for wind protection.
- Remove the lower leaves of brussels sprouts to expose the buds along the stem. Harvest from the bottom up.
- Fill bird feeders to attract chickadees, nuthatches, and juncos—they will not only brighten the landscape but also clean up insect larvae and eggs on trees and shrubs.
