Plus, how to can, pickle, breathe for stress relief, and more!
| Thank you, Robert King from Canobie Lake, Salem, NH, for this week’s photo! | In times of uncertainty, it’s natural to look to the past. Sometimes this means exploring happy memories: days spent with loved ones, moments filled with joy, or big goals realized. ‘Looking to the past’ can also be less literal and, perhaps, even more rewarding. Consider the number of people who have started to pick up new “old” skills; ones that are more in line with self-sufficiency than the conveniences of modern life. Instead of grabbing takeout, more families are making dinner at home. First-timers are experiencing the joys of gardening, especially in growing their own food. Using decidedly low-tech tools, staying home more has also brought out the DIY and creative talents of many. It’s amazing what a hammer, a paint brush, and a little bit of curiosity and ambition can accomplish. If you’ve started a new-to-you hobby or project recently (no matter what it is!), keep it up. One of the great joys of life is learning and some of the best lessons can come from the past. As brand-new gardens start to bear fruit (and vegetables!), another “old school” technique has been gaining in popularity: canning and pickling. Our step-by-step guides will teach beginners the basics, including water bath vs. pressure canning, a complete list of supplies to get started, and how to pick and prepare veggies for picking. Since the beginning of time, there’s been one universal, tried-and-true technique guaranteed to alleviate stress: just breathe. Check out these breathing techniques to help release tension and relax. Finally, before streaming services and video-on-demand, there was one must-see show that everyone was talking about. Stargazing is easy, absolutely free, and requires no special equipment to begin. Our Night Sky Map for July will show you how to find The Summer Triangle, a distinctive three-cornered pattern formed by the bright stars Vega, Altair, and Deneb. |
