| The Weather in January
The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a warmer-than-normal January for most of the country, but will you still need your snow shovel? Find out. |

Like its ancient Roman namesake Janus, January is rightly depicted with two faces, one looking into the past and the other into the future. It only makes sense that January is rich with holidays and folklore.
January is both National Hot Tea Month and National Clean Up Your Computer Month. New Year’s Day, of course, brings with it plenty of traditions, from eating black-eyed peas for good fortune to personal resolutions. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention some of the weather folklore. For instance, one piece of wisdom says that the first 3 days of January rule the weather for the coming 3 months. Could this be true? Here’s what The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting.
Most regions of the country can expect the coldest winter temperatures around mid- to late January, and, except for in southern regions, January is looking snowy, too. Even so, every part of the country can expect warmer-than-normal temperatures. In fact, half of the country will see temperatures at least 5 degrees higher than normal, with Alaska’s monthly average a full 8 degrees higher than expected. The only exceptions are in the High Plains, where temperatures will be about average, and in the Intermountain, Desert Southwest, Pacific Southwest regions, and Hawaii, where temperatures will be 1 or 2 degrees below normal.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac—America’s oldest and most popular almanac—uses a unique, age-old formula that’s traditionally 80% accurate. Our weather forecasting methodology stems from a secret formula that was devised by our founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792.
Thomas believed that weather on Earth was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun. Notes about his formula are locked in a black box in our offices in Dublin, New Hampshire. Over the years, we have refined and enhanced this formula with state-of-the-art technology and modern scientific calculations. For example, our overall accuracy rate in forecasting the direction of temperature change from normal for the 2018–2019 winter was 88.9%. |

| | | The Full Moon in January | January’s full Moon was called the Wolf Moon by both Native American tribes and colonial Americans. The Native Americans used the monthly Moons and nature’s signs as a sort of calendar to track the seasons. Why this name? It was common to hear wolves at this time of year.
What else should you know about January’s Moon? The Moon’s sign and phase can show us the best days for certain activities throughout the month. For instance, January 14 and 19 are your best days to ask for a loan. These are also good days if you plan to start a diet to lose weight. Wait until the 25th if you want to start a project. Planning to paint or demolish something? You’ll have to check the best days in the 2020 Almanac for that.
How about fishing? Or setting eggs? Garnets form in layers of rock deep underground, where they withstand extreme temperature variations. Although the gem is usually found in shades of red, it can also be pink, orange, brown, yellow, green, purple, and black.
The garnet symbolizes constancy, truth, and faith, and at one time it was thought to keep the wearer safe during travel. They also were thought to prevent nightmares, although if you dream of losing a garnet necklace, unexpected good fortune could be in your future.
