| The Only Weather Notebook You Need Don’t miss out on your chance to record weather history, as part of your membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Watcher’s Club. | |
| Dear Weather Watcher, Some people may call it “small talk,” but we think that weather is one of the most fascinating topics for any conversation. And since you’re here, we’re guessing that you do, too. Maybe you even record the weather near your home in a weather notebook? If you lived in Maine, back in 1991, you would have had some surreal weather to take note of. Between April 9 and April 13, a 3-mile-long ice jam on the St. John River broke up, releasing a 30-foot wall of ice. Once that ice began moving, there was no stopping. It crushed cars and destroyed houses and bridges. In the town of Allagash, residents said that the resulting landscape was “like walking on the Moon.” That’s not the only story of destructive ice. On February 5, 1997, high winds in Colchester, Ontario, pushed mountains of ice against the northern shore of Lake Erie, crushing several houses and cottages. Although ice can be destructive, it can also be a cause for celebration. In January of 1821, the Hudson River froze solid. Thousands of people crossed the ice from New York City to New Jersey, pausing at “refreshment taverns” that were placed in the middle of the river. How thick would that ice have to be? Well, if you’re on a pond or a lake, you’d need 7½ inches of ice to hold a small passenger car, so that should give you some idea. That’s a lot of ice for a river! (Although we’re pretty sure that no one was driving a Chevy across the river in 1821.) Imagine recording events like these in your very own Weather Notebook! You can record and organize 4 years of local weather, including temperature, wind speed, humidity, and more with your personal Weather Notebook. Plus there are all the facts, folklore, and information that you would expect from your membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Watcher’s Club. |

| | | That's Cold | Just how cold would it need to be for several inches of ice to form on the Hudson? Geography aside, it certainly would be cold enough in Vostok, Antarctica, where the temperature reached –128.6°F on July 21, 1983. Here on our continent, Snag, in Canada’s Yukon Territory, holds the record for the lowest temperature recorded in North America, at –81°F. The United States isn’t far behind that, with the country’s record low coming in at –79.8°F on January 23, 1971, at Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska. There’s no arguing that’s some cold air. Combine that with wind, and you can really get chilly. Just ask the residents of Pelly Bay, Northwest Territories, where a temperature of –60°F, combined with wind speeds of 35 miles per hour, produced a windchill of –133°F That’s a cool breeze, for sure! But you’ll never guess how fast the wind was moving on April 12, 1934. (Actually, if you have the Weather Notebook, you won’t need to guess. You can look at the Weather History and find out.) | Hot Stuff | Not every weather story is about the cold. Some of them are about cold and hot. Like that week in March 1989, in Wichita Falls, Texas. It started out cold. In fact, the town recorded a record cold of 8°F. But 6 days later, the temperature reached a record high of 95°F. Still, 95°F seems relatively balmy when you compareit to the reading on June 15, 1896, in Fort Mojave, California. That’s the day when the local temperature hit 127°F! Seems like a good day to reschedule pretty much anything you had planned. Join The Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Watcher’s Club and you can read more about record-breaking heat waves, blizzards, droughts, and a bevy of fascinating weather history. Find out what happened at the end of a 10-day heat wave in Pennsylvania or discover a town in California that went more than 2 years without a drop of rain. Or find out about lightning and thunder. | | Storms a-Brewin’ |
| Most of the 100,000 thunderstorms across the United States each year are mild. At most, they last a few hours and leave your plants happy and growing. A very small number of those storms, however, are severe. They can last for hours and might travel more than 200 miles, bringing hail and strong gusts of wind. One such storm in South Carolina must have been especially severe. On July 2, 1843, residents of Charleston reported that an alligator had fallen from the sky during a thunderstorm. This puts an entirely new twist on “raining cats and dogs”! A storm in Denver, Colorado, brought about some memorable results, too. We’re talking serious hail here.
